Black on Black on Black

GROG (2023)

"I'M LEAVING HERE TOMMOROW"

Black on Black on Black is the 5th track on Frog's 2023 album GROG.

The song is based on The Odyssey, an epic credited to the Greek poet Homer, and the section of the story where the Greek Odysseus is held captive on an island by the nymph Calypso. Odysseus longed to leave for the sea to go home to his wife and child, calling out to his divine mentor, Athena, for aid. Odysseus can escape the island with the aid of the gods (specifically Athena), and the lyrics "Black on Black on Black, I'm gonna get you back" could be interpreted as said from the perspective of Athena, with "You're gonna get me, and then you're gonna see" being a response from the perspective of Odysseus. Calypso's island in the myth, Ogygia, is substituted as "Omphalos" in the song. Omphalos in Greek mythology is a stone that represents the center of the Earth.

Black on Black on Black was originally written with a banjo on a couch and was produced during a time when Bateman was into The Odyssey (rightfully so). In an interview with Firebird Magazine, upon a question being asked about Black on Black on Black being so different from previous songs, he declares the idea of a project called "A Thousand Versions of the Same Song". I wonder what came out of that.

Black on Black on Black is the second frog song known to have connections to Greek mythology, with God Once Loved a Woman taking cues from Zeus' frequent outings with human women.
